Hypnotherapy

Many people I see at my practice in Hoyland, Barnsley have asked me if I am able to control their mind or change their personality with hypnotherapy. Much of this concern is due to hypnosis (rather than hypnotherapy) being used on stage for entertainment. Clinical hypnotherapy does not operate in this way.

 Respect and Consent

On the contrary, it is based upon mutual respect and consideration, which forms a contract for teamwork between the therapist and the person seeking support through hypnosis. A person will only enter into a deeply relaxed hypnotic state in their own time, upon their own terms and with their willingness and consent. Therefore, without this mutual respect and consent, hypnosis is unlikely to occur with any true success. Anyone who felt uncomfortable with the therapist would not be sufficiently relaxed to engage in therapeutic treatment or be open to new ways of problem solving. Therefore, my answer is "no", I cannot re-programme anyone against their will with hypnotherapy but I do aim to support my clients to make better choices for themselves.

 Gentle Relaxation

Hypnotherapy is achieved when the therapist provides a relaxing and calm environment to enable you to experience the very natural state of totally focusing your mind. It's a bit like reading an interesting book in a noisy room - yet you are still able to focus exclusively on the story. Although you are aware of other activity and events all around you, which you could engage in if you chose to, you prefer to stay in your book. All you are doing is entering a hypnotic state that assists you to focus upon the task at hand (e.g. reading your book). This ability can provide the vehicle for true relaxation and the relief to switch off. Once this is achieved, with the gentle help and support of your therapist, your mind can start to explore new solutions and different ways of looking at problems. You exclude a lot of the daily baggage that clouds everyday thought, judgement and functioning. Most people experience a day-dreamy relaxed state, when the body feels somewhere between wakefulness and just before you drop off to sleep. However, the mind is clearly focussed and can hear everything that it wishes to pay attention to. When people come out of a hypnotherapy session, (it helps to work in a relaxing atmosphere of my home in Hoyland, Barnsley) they often describe a feeling of being very alert, alive and full of vigour!

Healing begins

The purpose of this absolute focus is to work with the therapist who can help you with hypnotherapy to draw upon your often hidden strengths that you may have forgotten or that you never allowed yourself to know you had. This is when the therapy starts. You take ownership of your difficulties and become more in control of your issues. With the aid of hypnotherapy, you will be able to consider different approaches and better solutions to problems and difficulties, often producing positive behavioural changes and responses. The ultimate goal is to empower you to achieve the life that you envisaged for yourself and your future.

Children and Young People

Children can gain great benefit and relief and respond very quickly to Hypnotherapy. Children are naturally curious and often 'unprogrammed' when considering new possibilities involving fantasy and fiction. They do not get caught up with analysis and concerns about what others might think (up to teenage years of course!). Therefore children are good candidates for hypnotherapy, the use of which can also benefit parents, direct family and significant others involved in the child's life. The listing on the home page gives some examples of issues particular to children that can benefit from hypnotherapy, including small traumas. Any therapy must be discussed with parents or guardians (and where appropriate significant others) and will require explicit permission from both parents for children less than 16 years of age. When engaging in hypnotherapy or indeed any type of therapy with children, my personal belief is that it is essential that therapists have been checked by the police ... see the What to Expect page.

Energy Healing in Conjunction with Hypnotherapy

Energy Healing can offer relief from aches and pains, muscle and tissue re-alignment and general well-being by combining this therapy with a process known as Quantum Touch. This is an American term used to describe an approach to healing using hand/finger touch. In effect the therapist causes their own vibrational energy to vibrate through blocked energy areas of a client's body. This process then assists the client's own energy to harmonise with this vibration and promote their own healing and realignment. Once this harmonisation commences then a light hypnotherapy suggestion session can help the body to continue healing itself. I am currently offering this alternative to general hypnosis for pain alleviation and management of conditions such as joint stiffness, back and neck pain and muscle tension (such as sports injuries and postural problems).

Energy healing works just as well for pets and animals as it does for people. As well as seeing clients in my practice in Hoyland, Barnsley – I also travel to individual’s homes if clients or pets are not mobile and it is less stressful to see them at home.  I have found it to be very beneficial for joints, arthritis, listlessness and signs of depression or apathy.
